As this year draws to a close, I've been thinking about the challenges many of us have faced in our personal lives and the heavy collective weight we carry as we witness frightening weather events, wars, political turmoil—and here in the U.S., rising violence and a deepening erosion of empathy and trust.
It would be easy to let the darkness win. To close our hearts against the pain. To give up on believing things can get better.
But here's what I know about the women in this community: you don't give up. Even when it's hard—especially when it's hard—you keep showing up. You keep trying. You keep looking for ways to stay whole and present and alive.
This year, three essays became How She Thrives reader favorites. What strikes me about them now is how they form a kind of survival kit for difficult times—three practices that help us navigate both personal transitions and collective grief. Together, they remind us how to hold onto our humanity when the world feels like it's falling apart.
What if joy isn't something that just happens to us, but something we can cultivate like a garden? This essay explores a deceptively simple practice that builds resilience for harder times—creating a reservoir of light to draw from when darkness falls.
Hope is more than wishful thinking, and it's definitely not toxic positivity. Discover the three essential elements of true hope and practical ways to nurture it when it feels most fragile—especially during life's threshold moments and uncertain times.
Real courage often happens in the quiet spaces where no one's watching. This essay reveals what personal struggle taught me about the kind of bravery that doesn't make headlines—and why your private acts of courage matter.

You can reach for any one of these practices when you need it most. But here's what I've discovered: when they start weaving together, something remarkable happens. Joy gives us the energy to hope. Hope gives us reason to be courageous. And courage allows us to remain open to joy even when staying open feels risky.
In this moment, with all its heaviness and uncertainty, may you remember: You already have everything you need inside you. The capacity for joy, even in small doses. The ability to nurture hope, even when it feels fragile. The courage to keep going, even when you can't see where the path leads.
Thank you for being here. For reading, for reflecting, for sharing your own stories and struggles. Your presence in this community matters more than you know.
Here's to the year ahead—may we keep instructing ourselves in these essential practices, and may we hold space for each other as we tend the light.
